Sliding Doors
Sliding doors open horizontally and are great space savers.
Sliding doors, also known as “sliders” or “gliding doors” open horizontally, often parallel to a wall. Sliding doors typically consist of two parts—a fixed panel and a sliding panel. It opens by either gliding on a track or hanging from rollers mounted above.
Types of Sliding Doors
There are several types of sliding doors, such as pocket doors, sliding glass doors (patio door), multi-slide door, bi-fold door, barn door and bypass doors.
Benefits of Sliding Doors
Space Saving
The biggest benefit of sliding doors is that they save space, as they operate sideways versus hinged doors which need space to swing open. Sliding doors are perfect for smaller rooms where space is at a premium. Furniture and other household items can be placed near the sliding door.
Connection to the Outdoors
Larger openings can be achieved with sliding doors and can open up a home creating more of a connection to the outdoors. Bigger openings are also ideal for higher traffic areas such as entrances to the backyard.
Less Breakage and Maintenance
Sliding doors also have fewer components than other forms of windows and doors which means less breakage and less maintenance over time, proving to be more of a cost-effective and hassle-free solution for most homes.
Easy to Use & Control
They are easy to use as they glide along the frame with relative ease and you can control how much you want the sliding door to open.
Sliding doors have a contemporary style as they have a modern and sleek look.
Sliding Doors Disadvantages
Cleaning
Sliding doors can be somewhat challenging to clean on the outside as they slide back and forth and some corners can be difficult to reach.
Fingerprints
Often glass sliding doors can show fingerprints quite quickly as people tend to slide it open by touching the glass itself and not the door handle.
